Boar Auction Moves Back Home; Groundbreaking for Boar Auction Centrum Held

20170511_101845_HDR

The Philippine Swine Industry Research and Development Foundation, Inc. (PSIRDFI), better known as The Philippine Swine Foundation, announces that the popular Boar Auction will move back to the Agricultural Training Institute – International Training Center on Pig Husbandry, ATI-ITCPH, in Lipa, Batangas.

New and improved Boar Auction facilities will be constructed this year to house a modern electronic bidding system.  Dubbed the Boar Auction Centrum it will be able to seat 240 persons and will feature a VIP room.

Groundbreaking ceremonies for the Boar Auction Centrum were held last May 11 at the ATI-ITCPH grounds.  Among those present at the ceremony were Dr. Enrico P. Garzon, Jr., DA Asst Secretary-Livestock, Mr. Jimmy N. Chua, President, PSIRDFI, ATI-OIC Director Dr. Luz A. Taposok and ATI-ITCPH Center Director Dr. Ruth S. Miclat-Sonaco.  Also in attendance were PSRDFI members: Mr. Leonardo Tañada (Vice President), Mrs. Loretta Galang, Dr. Art Calud, Dr. Ida Reyes, Mr. Alex Reyes, Mr. Sonny Catacutan (Cargill Country Mgr), Dr. Arnold Frontuna, Mr. Dexter Pablo, Mr. Leo Apo and Ms. Tess Martinez; Swine Monitoring Ms. Kath Tamisin; representatives from ATI-ITCPH and UNIBAT. Fr. Ernie Garcia gave the invocation and the blessing of the ceremony.

Proceeds from the Boar Test and Auction support the annual Swine Production Performance Monitoring Project in the Philippines which is a joint endeavor of the Philippine Swine Foundation and the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development – Department of Science and Technology (PCAARRD-DOST).

Data and Statistics from the project are used to measure and gauge farm and industry performance on a year to year basis.

The late Dr. Valentino Argañosa oversaw and nurtured the growth of the project which has been ongoing for 26 years.

The successful Boar Auction has traditionally been the highlight event during INAHGEN, the International Animal Health, Genetic and Nutrition Congress.

However, INAHGEN broke up earlier this year with The Philippine Veterinary Drug Association’s (PVDA) departure from the group. Fortunately, the construction of the Boar Auction Centrum came timely as the closure of INAHGEN will not displace the Breeding Farms who test their genetics amongst the best boars in the country.

by Carlo Antonio Chua on May 15

A second installment of the very first successful Pet Beach event held at the Acuaverde Beach Resort, along the crystal clear waters and pristine white sand of Laiya, Batangas. This pet-friendly resort aims to provide discerning pet owners a worry free vacation, offering its amenities to the pets and owners alike. Hence, the launch of a second series of this well received event to promote a fun-filled bonding between the pets and their owners, for an enjoyable weekend outside the hustle and bustle(not so clean air) of the metro.

Event highlights are as follows:

“Beach PAWlympics” which consisted of:

  • A mini agility challenge
  • 500m dash
  • 20m swimfest

“PETkini Open”

A beach fashion show for the dogs and their owners to showcase their most creative bikini outfits.

“Swim Fetch Challenge”

An excitingly fun swim and retrieve game for these rascals to play fetch, with freedom and joy!

“Digital Scavenger Hunt”

Scavenging for awesome treats have never been this fun. Who knew that dogs could be tech savvy like their masters? It’s a fun way for the pet and their master to bond.

“My Pet SuPAWstar Talent Show”

Think of America’s Got Talent but, the humans aren’t the stars of this show. No. It’s their four legged furballs who’re doing all the showboating of their talents, taught by their owners. How cool is that!

“Scream for Ice Cream Eating Challenge”

Now it’s time for the pet owners to strutt their stuff. Bring in the hot and humid weather and a ton load of ice cream to the party, these pet owners are sure to join in on the fun. If you thought this event was mainly for the pets, well think again!

“Sand PAWstle making contest”

A contest wherein the owners can show how much they love their pets so much, by “immortalizing” their pets in sand castle form. Until the salty beach water washes it away. But, you get the point. This is where creativity meets love and affection, thrown in one event.

Some photos of the event, to give you a clear visual of the fun and excitement that happened at the Acuaverde Beach Resort last April 28, 2017:

Philippine beefs up competitiveness of swine industry

MANILA, Philippines – Despite the challenges facing the swine industry, hog raising has been a profitable agricultural enterprise for Filipinos.

The P191 billion swine industry is the largest among the livestock and poultry industries of the country.

It is the second largest contributor to the country’s agriculture next to rice, accounting for 18.28 percent of the total value of agricultural production.

Swine production plays a major role in ensuring the country’s food security by providing about 60 percent of the total animal meat consumption of Filipinos.

The Philippine swine industry is ranked eighth in the world in terms of the volume of pork production and number of breeding sows. However, majority or two-thirds of the pigs in the Philippines are kept by smallhold pig raisers.

Despite being dynamic and technologically advanced, the local pig industry is still confronted with inefficiency of production due to low sow productivity, high mortality due to inefficient diagnostic tool, and lack of native pig genetic resource conservation, improvement and utilization initiative.

To ensure the continued growth of the hog industry,  the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD) supported research and development  initiatives for swine through the Industry Strategic science and technology program (ISP).

The program aims to address the current problems by developing technologies and systems that are expected to improve the productivity and production efficiency as well as increase the overall competitiveness of the Philippine swine industry.

In partnership with the Accredited Swine Breeders Association of the Philippines, the Philippine Carabao Center (PCC) and Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) have developed the application of gene markers in breeding and selection of breeder pigs.

This activity has optimized 10 gene marker protocols associated to high litter size, fast growth rate and meat qualities as well as seven markers for screening of genetic defects and disease resistance.

The adoption of the gene marker technology by the swine breeder farms is expected to increase productivity and efficiency in terms of number of pigs weaned and liveweight produced per sow per year.

To address the problem on high mortality due to diseases, researchers from the Central Luzon State University developed six LAMP protocols for common swine respiratory and gastrointestinal pathogens causing diseases.

CLSU forged memoranda of agreement with three Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratories of the Department of Agriculture institutionalizing the LAMP assays to be part of their routine diagnostic protocol.

A web-based group monitoring system for pigs was likewise established.  The data/image transmitted can be viewed real-time using the desktop computer in the farm’s office.

Apart from this, a smartphone application was developed that could  estimate body weight of pigs using captured images.

In response to the need to implement a pork traceability system from pen to plate, a computer software system was developed for tracking animals inside the farm and from the farm to the slaughterhouse gate using radiofrequency identification.

A DNA-based species authentication technology  that can detect meat from pig, cattle, goat and horse, was likewise developed. – The Philippine Star

The INFARMCO Group consisting of MS Schippers Philippines, Prime Veterinary Philippines Inc. and Wonderzyme, Inc. participated in the 26th National Hog Convention and Trade Exhibits at the SMEX last March 30-April 1.  The convention is jointly organized by the Pork Producers Federation of the Philippines, Inc. The convention aims to highlight ideas and best practices from the best in the hog business.  It is a venue of opportunity for participants and experts to share their experiences and techniques.

This year’s HogCon carries the theme: “Change is Now, Pinoy Pork Wow na Wow!” which focuses on how the various industry players can all work together and pitch in to strengthen, protect and promote the local pork industry.

The HogCon has become an important tool for both veterans in the business and those planning join the sector because this is the only place where they can learn firsthand the ins and outs of the industry.

“Every year, we welcome thousands of participants who come to the event, eager to learn new things,” noted Ely Yu, ProPork Chairman. – with excerpts from Swine Magazine
